What is a Boiler Steel Structure?

The structural steel framework that carries all boiler pressure parts, drums, and auxiliary equipment — and provides safe access for operating and maintenance personnel at every elevation.

Role in a Boiler Installation

A boiler does not stand alone. Every CFB boiler, HRSG, or package boiler requires a structural steel system that supports the pressure parts from above (suspended boiler) or from below (bottom-supported), provides access to all maintenance points at elevation, routes piping and ductwork through the boiler island, and resists wind, seismic, and thermal expansion forces over decades of operation.

The steel structure is typically engineered and fabricated by the boiler supplier or the EPC contractor. Sourcing it from the same supplier as the pressure parts simplifies engineering coordination, reduces interface risk, and allows combined shipment in the same container.

Suspended Boiler
Pressure parts hung from overhead steel frame. Allows free thermal downward expansion without constraint.
Bottom-Supported
Pressure parts sit on lower beams. Common for smaller package boilers and some industrial steam generators.
Semi-Suspended
Combination — upper furnace suspended, lower sections supported. Typical for large CFB and utility boilers.

Structural steel fabricated to the design code specified in your project — AISC, Eurocode, or GB — with hot-dip galvanizing or painting as required.

Q235B / Q345B
Standard and medium-strength structural carbon steel. Default for GB-code projects and most domestic Chinese boiler structures. Q345B for heavier column sections and main beams.
ASTM
A36 / A572 Gr.50
ASTM structural grades used when project specification calls for AISC-aligned materials. A572 Gr.50 for high-strength sections where member sizes need to be minimised.
EN
S235JR / S355JR
European structural steel grades for Eurocode-designed projects. EN 1090 fabrication certification applies. Material certificates to EN 10204 3.1 available for all sections.

High-Temperature Grades
For structural members in direct contact with high-temperature zones — Q345R / SA-516 or alloy grades as required by thermal analysis and project specification.

Surface Treatment

Hot-dip galvanizing (ISO 1461) — 85 µm+ zinc coating. Recommended for outdoor platforms, handrailing, and grating in all climates.
Epoxy primer + topcoat — Shot-blasted to Sa 2.5, 2-coat system. Used where HDG is not practical or where colour is specified.
Red oxide primer only — Shop prime for structures that receive finish coating on site by the civil/erection contractor.
High-temperature paint — For members exposed to heat radiation from furnace panels and ductwork surfaces.

Structural Welding

What is included in a complete boiler steel structure package?

A typical complete package includes main supporting columns and beams, boiler suspension hanger systems, wind and seismic bracing, multi-level platform beams and cross-framing, staircase stringers and cage ladders, pipe racks for steam and feedwater lines, ductwork and flue gas duct support frames, cable tray and instrument supports, and foundation anchor bolt assemblies.

The scope is always project-specific. We can supply the complete structural package or individual elements — for example, main frames only (if a local civil contractor handles platforms) or platforms only (if the boiler supplier handles the main frame). Tell us your scope split and we'll quote accordingly.

Can you design and fabricate structures for retrofit projects?

Yes. Retrofit projects require working around existing foundations, operating clearances, and site access constraints that do not exist in a greenfield design. Our engineering team can work from existing drawings, site measurements, or 3D scans to design compatible new or extended structures. We consider thermal expansion of existing members, available bolt holes on existing steelwork, and phased delivery to match shutdown windows. Please send your existing drawings and describe the modification scope when enquiring.

Which design codes do you follow?

We design to the structural code specified in your project documents. Most common are AISC 360 / ASCE 7 (Americas), Eurocode 3 with EN 1090 fabrication (Europe and EN-aligned markets), and GB 50017 / GB 50009 (China and some Asian markets). We also work to project-specific structural specifications that combine elements of multiple codes, which is common in EPC projects where the owner or lender has their own engineering standards.

If no code is specified, we propose the most appropriate standard for the destination country and seek your approval before detailing begins.

What quality documentation do you provide?

Standard documentation package includes material certificates (EN 10204 3.1 for all structural sections), welding procedure specifications (WPS) and welder qualification records (WPQ), dimensional inspection reports, surface treatment records (galvanizing or painting), as-built drawings with erection marks, and packing lists keyed to the erection mark scheme.

For projects with third-party inspection, we can coordinate ITP hold points covering material verification, welding inspection, dimensional checks, and final release before packing. All documentation is provided in English; translated documents can be arranged where required.

What information do you need to prepare a structural quote?

The fastest route to a quote is structural general arrangement drawings showing column grid, platform elevations, and load points. If drawings are not yet available, the following allows a budget estimate:
