BOILER STEAM DRUM
Steam drum fabrication for water-tube boilers — new builds and replacement drums for power plants, industrial boilers, HRSGs, and waste heat recovery systems. Designed to your design pressure, temperature, nozzle layout, and code requirements.
Fundamentals
What is a Boiler Steam Drum?
The pressure vessel at the top of a water-tube boiler circuit — separating steam from the rising water-steam mixture, storing feedwater, and housing the separation internals that control steam quality.
How It Works
What We Supply

Engineering Scope
What Customers Ask Most
Steam drums are engineered-to-order pressure vessels. These are the questions we hear most often from EPC contractors, plant engineers, and procurement teams.
What design scope can ORL supply?
We design and fabricate steam drums for low, medium, and high-pressure boilers — including utility boilers, industrial boilers, biomass boilers, and HRSG / waste heat units.
- • New boiler steam drums
- • Replacement drums for existing units
- • Horizontal arrangement (standard)
- • Matching downcomer / riser / header interfaces
Which shell plate materials do you use?
Material is selected based on design pressure, temperature, and applicable code. We use certified boiler-quality steels with full mill traceability.
- SA-516 Gr.70 / Q345R — medium pressure
- SA-299 / 13MnNiMoR — high-pressure thick wall
- SA-387 Gr.11 / Gr.22 — HRSG & alloy service
- EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates — standard
How do you handle delivery scheduling?
Production schedule is confirmed after engineering review — we build the timeline backward from your outage or site installation window and track progress weekly.
- • Schedule confirmed after drawing approval
- • Outage window coordinated from the start
- • Weekly progress updates during fabrication
- • Risk flagged early — not at the last minute
What inspection and documentation do you provide?
A complete documentation package is standard — not an add-on. Third-party witness inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV, LR) can be arranged on request.
- • Shell plate & forging 3.1 MTCs
- • WPS / PQR, welder qualification records
- • PWHT chart + hydrostatic test report
- • RT / UT / MT NDE records & as-built drawing
How do you ensure steam separation performance?
Internal devices are designed to match your boiler's operating pressure, load range, and required steam purity — typically <0.5% moisture by mass for power plant applications.
- Cyclone separators & chevron driers
- Feedwater distribution pipes & baffles
- Internal layout matched to circulation design
Can the drum be customised for my project?
Yes. We support both "build to print" and "engineering support" modes — send us your drawings, or share your boiler data and let our engineers develop the proposal.
- • Custom nozzle count, size & orientation
- • Special internals & support structures
- • Corrosion-resistant overlay on request
- • Reverse-engineering from field dimensions

Our Advantage
Why Choose ORL Power
Steam drum fabrication involves thick-plate rolling, precise nozzle layout, mandatory PWHT, and intensive inspection. The consequences of errors reach site. Here is what we do differently.
Nozzle Layout Verification
We review nozzle positions, orientations, and reinforcement requirements against your drawings before rolling begins — preventing costly field modifications during the outage.
Full Documentation Package
Shell plate 3.1 MTCs, nozzle forging certs, WPS/PQR, PWHT time-temperature charts, RT/UT records, hydro-test report, and as-built drawing — standard, not extra.
Outage Schedule Awareness
Drum replacement is almost always on the critical path. We track production weekly and flag risks early so you can adjust logistics — not after the deadline has passed.
Export & Heavy-Lift Experience
50+ countries served. Steel cradle packing, fumigation certs, Bill of Lading, breakbulk freight coordination, and country-specific import documents handled as standard.
ASME & GB Dual Capability
Grade A Boiler Manufacturer licence (China) and ASME S-stamp — you specify the code that matches your project jurisdiction without changing supplier.
Responsive Technical Team
English-speaking engineers handle inquiries directly. Questions on MAWP, shell thickness, PWHT scope, and nozzle schedules answered within 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Steam Drum FAQ
Common questions from EPC contractors, plant engineers, and procurement teams worldwide.
What information do you need to quote a steam drum?
The most useful starting point is a drum data sheet or boiler GA drawing. If those are unavailable, we can develop a preliminary layout from the following:
- • Design pressure (MAWP) and operating temperature
- • Steam capacity (t/h) and boiler type (natural / forced circulation, CFB, HRSG, etc.)
- • Shell inside diameter and overall length, if known
- • Nozzle list — quantity, size, and schedule (riser, downcomer, feedwater, steam outlet, drain, vent, etc.)
- • Applicable design code (ASME Section I / GB/T 16507 / EN 12952 / other)
- • New fabrication or replacement — if replacement, existing GA drawing or dimensional survey data
- • Required delivery date or outage window
Can you supply a replacement drum to fit an existing boiler?
Yes — drum replacement is a core part of our business. We work in two modes:
- • Build to print — if original drawings are available, we manufacture to match existing nozzle layout, saddle positions, and head profile
- • Reverse engineering — if drawings are unavailable, we work from field measurements or a dimensional survey to develop a manufacturing drawing for approval before fabrication begins
Before confirming the order we carry out a nozzle layout review to verify connection compatibility with existing pipework and support structures — preventing costly modifications during the outage window.
What design codes can steam drums be manufactured to?
- • ASME Section I — Power Boilers. ORL Power holds an ASME S-stamp and operates under an approved quality programme
- • Chinese GB standards — GB/T 16507 Water-tube Boilers, TSG G0001 Boiler Safety Technical Regulation. Grade A Boiler Manufacturer licence
- • EN 12952 — European water-tube boiler standard
- • Project-specific codes — IBR (India), ГОСТ (CIS), and others confirmed during technical review
Is post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) always required?
PWHT requirements depend on design code, shell material, and wall thickness:
- • Under ASME Section I, PWHT is mandatory for carbon steel drums with wall thickness exceeding 38 mm (1½ in), or where Cr-Mo (P-No. 4 / 5) materials are used regardless of thickness
- • Under GB/T 16507, similar thresholds apply based on material group and plate thickness
- • For high-pressure drums (typically >10 MPa) with thick SA-516 Gr.70 or 13MnNiMoR shells, PWHT is almost always required
ORL Power performs PWHT in calibrated furnaces with thermocouple monitoring and continuous chart recording. PWHT records form part of the standard documentation package.
What is included in the delivery scope?
Standard steam drum delivery typically includes:
- • Complete shell with all nozzles, manholes, and handholes
- • Internal steam separation devices (cyclones, chevron driers, feedwater distributors)
- • Internal support structures and anti-surge components
- • Protective coating and sea-worthy heavy-lift packing
- • Complete documentation package (MTCs, WPS/PQR, PWHT records, NDE reports, hydro-test report, as-built drawing)
Additional items — external saddle supports, connecting piping, and instrumentation — can be included based on your project scope.
What is a typical lead time?
Lead time depends on shell size, wall thickness, nozzle count, PWHT scope, and production loading. Typical ranges after drawing approval:
- • Small industrial drums (ID ≤ 1,000 mm, P ≤ 4 MPa): 10–14 weeks
- • Medium drums (ID 1,000–1,600 mm, up to 10 MPa): 14–20 weeks
- • Large high-pressure drums (ID > 1,600 mm, 10–19 MPa): 20–28 weeks
For planned outages, share your shutdown window at the enquiry stage so we can build the schedule from your required delivery date backward. Contact us for emergency replacement situations.
