Structural safety systems installed on boiler platforms, staircases, and access walkways to protect operating and maintenance personnel at height.

Role on a Boiler Structure

Boiler platforms sit at multiple elevations — from ground-level ash hoppers to top-drum level, often 20–40 m above grade. Every walkway, staircase, and access opening requires compliant handrailing and kick plates to meet occupational safety codes and project specifications.

Handrailing is typically supplied as part of the boiler steel structure package, but can also be quoted and shipped separately for retrofit, replacement, or when a local fabricator handles the main structure but not the safety systems.

Surface Treatment Options

Hot-Dip Galvanizing (HDG)
Recommended
85–100 µm zinc coating to ISO 1461. Best durability for outdoor boiler environments with heat, moisture, and flue gas exposure. Long service life, no on-site painting required.
Epoxy Primer + Topcoat
Shot-blasted to Sa 2.5, 2-coat epoxy system. Specified where HDG is not practical due to dimensions or where colour coding is required. Touch-up and topcoat typically done on site.
Red Oxide Primer Only
Basic shop primer for structures that will receive finish coating on site by the civil/erection contractor. Lower cost option where site painting is already planned.

What standards do your handrailings meet?

Our structural fabrication is certified to EN 1090-1 / EN 1090-2 (EXC2). This covers the Declaration of Performance and CE marking requirements for structural steel components supplied to European or EN-aligned projects. For projects specifying other codes (OSHA, AS/NZS, GB), we fabricate to the dimensional and load requirements stated in the customer drawing — load capacity and post spacing are defined by the project, not by our workshop standard. Material certificates to EN 10204 3.1 are available for all steel sections used.

What surface treatment do you recommend for outdoor boiler platforms?

Hot-dip galvanizing to ISO 1461 is our standard recommendation for outdoor boiler platforms. The 85–100 µm zinc coating provides long-term corrosion protection without requiring periodic repainting, which is difficult on an operating boiler. Galvanized handrailing is particularly well suited to tropical climates (sugar mills in Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa) where humidity and rain exposure are constant. For projects where HDG is not specified or practical — for example, where the main steel structure will be painted and the client prefers a matching appearance — we can supply shot-blasted and epoxy-primed sections ready for finish coat.

Do you supply anchor bolts, baseplate hardware, and gate fittings?

Yes — the standard supply scope includes posts, rails, kick plates, baseplates, and the anchor bolts and nuts required for floor fixing. Self-closing gate assemblies with drop-pin latches are supplied where gate openings are specified in the drawing. Hardware is galvanized to match the structural members. If the project spec calls for specific bolt grades or proprietary gate hardware, please note this in the inquiry.

What information do you need to prepare a quote?

The fastest route to a quote is a drawing or bill of materials showing section lengths, post spacing, rail height, and number of gate openings. If drawings are not yet available, the following information allows us to prepare a preliminary estimate:

  • • Total linear metres of platform handrailing and stair handrailing
  • • Number of elevations and approximate platform perimeter at each level
  • • Number of cage ladders and approximate height
  • • Surface treatment requirement (galvanized / painted / primer only)
  • • Applicable code or standard (EN / OSHA / GB / project spec)
  • • Required delivery date and destination port
Can you supply handrailing together with grating, steel structure, and boiler pressure parts?

Yes. ORL Power supplies complete boiler structural packages including handrailing, grating (bar grating / expanded metal), boiler steel structure (columns, beams, staircase stringers), and all pressure parts in the same order. Consolidating into one shipment reduces freight cost, simplifies customs documentation, and means the site team deals with a single supplier for any dimensional or delivery queries. For EPC contractors handling multiple boiler units, this is typically the most efficient arrangement.
