Boiler Platform Steel Bar Grating — ORL Power

Fundamentals

What is Boiler Grating?

Steel bar grating panels used as the floor surface on boiler platforms, walkways, and stair treads — providing safe footing with open drainage and ventilation.

Role on a Boiler Structure

A boiler structure has multiple elevated platforms — from ground-level ash handling up to top-drum level, often 20–40 m above grade. Every walking and working surface requires a compliant floor material. Steel bar grating is the standard choice because it is load-rated, self-draining, ventilated, and compatible with hot-dip galvanizing for long service life in outdoor industrial environments.

Grating is typically supplied as part of the complete boiler steel structure package, but can also be quoted and shipped separately for retrofit, replacement, or when a local steel contractor handles the main structure but not the flooring.

Platform Flooring

Stair Treads
Serrated-bar grating treads for boiler access staircases — non-slip even when wet or oily.
Trench & Access Covers
Removable grating panels over cable trenches, pipe passages, and maintenance openings.

Types & Selection

Select by load requirement, opening size, and surface finish needed for your platform application.

Welded Steel Grating

The standard type for boiler platforms. Bearing bars and cross bars resistance-welded at every intersection for maximum rigidity. Available with plain or serrated bearing bars.

  • • Resistance-welded intersections
  • • Plain or serrated bearing bars
  • • ASTM A36 / Q235B / S235JR
  • • Hot-dip galvanized as standard

Press-Locked Grating

Cross bars are mechanically pressed into pre-punched slots in the bearing bars — no welding, so suitable for stainless steel and alloy grades where welding is undesirable or where a flush top surface is needed.

  • Smooth flush top surface
  • Suitable for SS 304 / 316L
  • Precise cross bar spacing
  • Corrosive or hygienic environments

Serrated Stair Treads

Grating panels with serrated (notched) bearing bar edges for stair tread applications. The serrations grip boot soles and resist slipping on wet, oily, or icy surfaces.

  • • Notched bearing bar top edge
  • • Pre-sized to customer stair width
  • • Nosing plate optional
  • • Hot-dip galvanized standard

Frequently Asked Questions

Grating FAQ

Common questions from EPC contractors and plant engineers ordering boiler structural packages.

What is the difference between welded and press-locked grating?

Welded grating fixes cross bars to bearing bars by resistance welding at every intersection. This is the most common type for industrial platforms — strong, robust, and straightforward to manufacture in carbon steel for hot-dip galvanizing.

Press-locked grating punches slots in the bearing bars and presses the cross bars in mechanically — no welding heat. This is preferred for stainless steel (where welding affects corrosion resistance), for applications needing a flush top surface, or where very precise cross bar spacing is required. Press-locked panels are slightly more expensive but allow stainless and alloy grades without the distortion issues of welded construction.

When should I specify serrated bearing bars instead of plain?

Serrated bars have notched top edges that grip boot soles and resist slipping when wet, oily, or greasy — they are the standard specification for stair treads on all boiler access staircases. Many project specifications also require serrated grating on all walking surfaces around burner fronts, ash handling areas, and any zone where oil or water may be present.

Plain bars are acceptable for areas that are dry underfoot and infrequently accessed, such as cable trench covers and maintenance hatches. If your project specification is silent on this, we recommend defaulting to serrated bearing bars for all personnel access areas.

What surface treatment do you recommend for outdoor boiler platform grating?

Hot-dip galvanizing to ISO 1461 (85–100 µm zinc) is the standard recommendation for outdoor boiler platforms. Galvanized grating does not require periodic repainting — important because painting open-mesh panels on an operating boiler is difficult and costly. Galvanized carbon steel grating is particularly well suited to tropical climates (sugar mills in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa) where constant humidity accelerates corrosion of painted surfaces. For plants where grating will be painted to match a corporate colour scheme, we supply shot-blasted and primed panels ready for finish coat application on site or at the erection contractor's workshop.

What information do you need to prepare a grating quote?

The fastest route to a quote is a platform layout drawing showing panel positions, cut dimensions, and openings. If drawings are not yet ready, the following allows a preliminary estimate:

  • • Total area of platform flooring (m²) by elevation
  • • Number and dimensions of stair tread sets
  • • Bearing bar size and spacing (or load class required)
  • • Surface treatment (HDG / painted / primer only)
  • • Steel grade (carbon steel or stainless)
  • • Applicable code or standard (ASTM / GB / EN)
  • • Destination port and required delivery date
Can you supply grating together with handrailing, steel structure, and boiler pressure parts?

Yes. ORL Power supplies complete boiler structural packages including grating, handrailing, steel structure (columns, beams, staircase stringers), and all pressure parts under one order. Consolidating into one shipment reduces freight cost, simplifies customs documentation, and means the site team deals with a single supplier for any dimensional or delivery queries. For EPC contractors handling multiple boiler units, this is typically the most efficient arrangement and allows one inspection team to cover the complete package.
