BOILER HANGERS
Pipe suspension and support systems for boiler steam lines, superheater tubes, and high-temperature piping — engineered to accommodate thermal expansion while maintaining design load. Supplied to ASME B31.1, MSS-SP-58, GB/T 12777, and EN 13480 with full documentation.
Fundamentals
What Are Boiler Hangers?
Pipe suspension devices that support the weight of steam lines, superheater tubes, and high-temperature piping while allowing controlled thermal movement between cold and hot operating positions.
Why Hangers Matter in a Boiler System
High-temperature boiler piping expands significantly between shutdown and operating temperature — a 30 m steam line operating at 540 °C can grow 250 mm or more. This thermal movement must be accommodated without transferring excessive force to pressure vessels, nozzles, or rotating equipment. Hangers apply the correct support load at all points in the travel range, allowing the pipe to move freely while preventing it from sagging or lifting off its supports.
Selection of the wrong hanger type — for example, using a rigid support where a spring is needed — overloads nozzles and generates stress in pressure parts that can lead to cracking over time. Proper hanger specification and load setting is a critical part of boiler piping engineering.

Product Range
Types & Selection
Select by thermal movement requirement, load criticality, and pipe location in the boiler system.
Spring Hangers
Coil spring units providing variable support that changes with pipe movement. The standard choice for most boiler piping where load variation within the travel range is acceptable.
- Load range: 50 – 50,000 lbs (22 – 22,680 kg)
- Travel: 25 – 200 mm (1" – 8") standard
- Load variation: ±25% across travel range
- ASME B31.1 / MSS-SP-58 / GB/T 12777
Constant Support Hangers
Mechanism-based units maintaining constant load throughout full travel range. Specified for main steam, reheat piping, and connections to rotating equipment where load variation must be minimised.
- Load range: 100 – 100,000 lbs (45 – 45,360 kg)
- Travel: 50 – 300 mm (2" – 12") standard
- Load variation: ±6% max across travel
- ASME B31.1 / MSS-SP-58 / EN 13480
Rigid Hangers & Supports
Fixed-length rod hangers, clevis assemblies, and pipe clamps for locations with no vertical thermal movement — cold-leg piping, anchor points, and lateral restraint positions.
- Load range: 25 – 25,000 lbs (11 – 11,340 kg)
- Threaded rod with ±50 mm adjustment
- Pipe clamps, U-bolts, and clevis types
- Carbon steel, alloy steel, or SS 304/316L

Industries Served
Who Orders Boiler Hangers
Any boiler with elevated steam lines, superheater tubes, or high-temperature piping requires a hanger system to support the pipe weight and accommodate thermal movement.
Power Plants
Main steam, reheat, and feedwater piping in CFB, coal, biomass, and gas-fired power stations. Constant support hangers specified for critical nozzle connections at turbine and drum level.
Sugar Mills
Process steam piping at 300–500 °C in bagasse-fired cogeneration boilers. Spring hangers for steam distribution headers and evaporator feed lines; rigid supports for anchor points.
Waste Heat Recovery
HRSG and waste heat boilers in steel, cement, and chemical plants. Compact hanger arrangements around existing process equipment — spring hangers for the variable thermal movement profiles typical of waste heat systems.
Waste Incineration
MSW and WtE boiler piping at 300–500 °C. Stainless steel or coated alloy hangers specified in zones with flue gas exposure. Constant support hangers for the membrane wall suspension connections.
EPC Contractors
EPC and turnkey contractors sourcing the complete boiler island — pressure parts, structural steel, and hanger systems — from one supplier to reduce procurement interfaces and simplify third-party inspection coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Boiler Hanger FAQ
Common questions from EPC contractors and piping engineers ordering hanger systems for boiler projects.
How do I choose between a spring hanger and a constant support hanger?
The selection criterion is load variation sensitivity. A spring hanger's support force changes as the pipe moves — by approximately 25% of hot load across the full travel range. This is acceptable for most economizer, convection tube, and process steam piping locations where nozzle loads are not critical.
A constant support hanger is required where load variation cannot be tolerated — mainly at connections to pressure vessel nozzles (steam drum, superheater headers), turbine inlet connections, and any location where the pipe stress analysis shows that spring-generated load variation exceeds the allowable nozzle load. Pipe stress software (Caesar II, ROHR2) will flag these locations. If you have a stress isometric or BOM, send it to us and we'll confirm the hanger type selection for each support point.
What is the difference between hot load and cold load settings?
Hot load is the support force required when the pipe is at operating temperature and pressure — this is the design load from the pipe stress analysis and is what the hanger must deliver in service.
Cold load is the setting position of the hanger at ambient temperature before pipe hydro-test and commissioning. Because the pipe moves from cold to hot position during startup, the spring is preset to a position that delivers the correct hot load when the pipe reaches its operating position. We set every hanger to the cold load position before delivery and provide a setting sheet confirming the cold indicator position. Installers lock the hanger travel during construction and release the lock before startup.
What information do you need to prepare a hanger quote?
The fastest route to a quote is a pipe hanger bill of materials (BOM) from the pipe stress engineer or the boiler OEM. A typical hanger BOM lists each support point with: hanger type (spring / constant / rigid), hot load (kg or lbs), travel range (mm), pipe operating temperature, and any applicable design standard.
If the BOM is not yet available, a preliminary estimate can be prepared with: boiler type and steam capacity, number and approximate location of support points, operating temperature and pressure of the steam lines, and applicable design code (ASME B31.1 / GB / EN).
What documentation do you provide with each hanger unit?
Standard documentation package per unit includes: EN 10204 3.1 material test certificate for structural steel components, load test report with actual load vs. deflection curve, dimensional inspection record, installation setting sheet (cold indicator position and hot load), and packing list keyed to the hanger BOM tag numbers.
For projects with a formal QCP/ITP, we can define hold and witness points for material verification, assembly inspection, and load test acceptance. All documents are traceable to individual unit serial numbers.
Can you supply replacement hangers for an existing boiler?
Yes. For replacement units, we need the nameplate information from the existing hanger — typically stamped on the housing or a attached tag — which includes: hanger type designation, hot load, travel, and spring rate. If the nameplate is unreadable, we can manufacture to site measurements and the pipe operating conditions. Replacement hangers are preset to the same cold setting as the originals so no re-calibration is needed during the outage. We can also manufacture to match proprietary designs from other hanger manufacturers if dimensions and performance data are provided.
Can you supply hangers together with boiler pressure parts?
Yes. ORL Power supplies complete boiler pressure part packages — superheaters, reheaters, economizers, steam drums, headers, and water walls — and can include the hanger system in the same order. All components ship together in the same container, reducing freight cost and customs filings. One QC team covers the complete package inspection, and one documentation file covers all pressure parts and hangers for the project. This is the standard arrangement for EPC contractors ordering a complete boiler island from one source.
